What the 3-minute test measures
The length most often used for employment and certificate benchmarks, because it is long enough to expose fatigue but short enough to administer.
Three minutes is the length at which a typing score stops being a sprint result and starts describing how you actually work. Formal tests favour it for that reason: it is long enough that burst speed cannot carry the result, yet short enough to sit inside an application process. If you are testing because someone else asked for a number, this is usually the right duration to use.
When to choose this length
Good for
- Preparing for a formal or employment typing benchmark
- Producing a figure you are willing to stand behind
- Measuring sustained accuracy rather than peak speed
Trade-offs
- Requires genuine concentration, so a spoiled attempt costs three minutes
- Peak-speed figures will look lower than your short-test bests
Accuracy at this length: Sustained accuracy is the point of this length. A score of 65 WPM at 98% accuracy is a stronger result than 75 WPM at 92%, and most formal benchmarks weight it that way.
Reading your score
These bands are guidance for deciding what to work on next, not measured population statistics. The documented figures behind them, including why the commonly quoted 40 WPM average is misleading, are on the average typing speed page.
- Under 25 WPMBuilding the basics
- Usually means you are still looking at the keyboard. Accuracy drills pay off far more than speed attempts at this stage.
- 25–39 WPMFunctional
- Comfortable for everyday messages and notes. This overlaps the transcription average from the 1999 study.
- 40–59 WPMSolid
- Fast enough that typing rarely limits your thinking. This is at or above the band that study called fast.
- 60–79 WPMStrong
- Within the documented professional range and sufficient for most roles that list a typing requirement.
- 80–99 WPMFast
- Matches the requirement for positions that specify 80–95 WPM.
- 100+ WPMVery fast
- Above most published job requirements. Sustaining it on a longer test with punctuation is the real challenge.
Questions about the 3-minute test
- Why do employers use a 3-minute typing test?
- A longer sample is harder to game and reflects sustained working pace rather than a short burst. Three minutes is long enough for concentration lapses and hand fatigue to show up, while still fitting into an assessment. It is a common compromise between the one-minute informal standard and a full five-minute test.
- What is a good 3-minute typing speed?
- Treat the published professional range of 43 to 80 WPM as the reference, and expect your three-minute figure to sit a little below your one-minute best. Sustained accuracy above 97% at a steady pace is generally more valuable to an employer than a higher speed with more errors.
- How many words will I type in 3 minutes?
- Multiply your WPM by three. At 40 WPM that is about 120 five-character words, and at 70 WPM about 210. Remember that a word is standardised as five characters rather than a real dictionary word.
Try other durations
Results are comparable only when the duration, corpus, and scoring version all match, so pick one length and stay with it when tracking progress.
