What is jitter clicking?
Jitter clicking is a technique where you tense your forearm and wrist muscles to create a rapid vibration that transfers to your fingertip on the mouse button. Instead of deliberately pressing and releasing, the muscle tension causes your finger to bounce on the button at high frequency. Skilled jitter clickers reach 10–14 CPS, roughly double the speed of regular clicking.
How to jitter click
- Place your index finger on the left mouse button with a relaxed hand.
- Tense your forearm and wrist as if you are about to shiver — the muscle should feel firm but not locked.
- Let the tension create a rapid micro-vibration in your fingertip. Your finger should bounce on the button without you consciously pressing each click.
- Practice in short 5-second bursts. Fatigue builds quickly and form degrades after 10–15 seconds.
Jitter vs. butterfly vs. regular clicking
- Regular clicking (5–8 CPS)
- Deliberate press-and-release with one finger. Most consistent and sustainable, but lowest ceiling.
- Jitter clicking (10–14 CPS)
- Forearm-tension vibration. High peak speed but fatigues within seconds and can strain muscles with overuse.
- Butterfly clicking (10–15 CPS)
- Alternating two fingers on one button. Similar speed to jitter with less strain, but requires a mouse that registers both fingers cleanly.

- Is jitter clicking bad for your hand?
- Prolonged jitter clicking can cause forearm fatigue and, with excessive practice, repetitive strain. Take breaks between rounds and stop if you feel pain. Short practice sessions (a few minutes) are generally fine.
- What CPS should I aim for?
- If you are new to jitter clicking, 8–10 CPS in a 5-second test is a solid start. With practice, 12+ is achievable. Compare your jitter score against your regular clicking on the CPS test to measure the improvement.
- Does mouse hardware matter?
- Yes. A lightweight mouse with low-debounce optical switches registers jitter clicks more reliably than a heavy mouse with mechanical switches that have a high debounce threshold.
