Evidence before advice

A weak key needs at least eight appearances and two mistakes before it can drive a recommendation.

Understand your score

A WPM number only means something once you know what it is measured against. The commonly repeated “average typing speed is 40 WPM” is not actually the average — it was the fast band in the study it came from, against a measured average of 32.5 WPM for copying text.

Frequently asked questions

How is my typing speed calculated?
Net WPM divides your correctly typed characters by five, then divides by the actual elapsed time in minutes. A word is standardised as five characters rather than a real dictionary word. Gross WPM uses every character you typed, including mistakes, so it is always the higher figure.
Is this typing test free and does it need an account?
It is free and requires no account. Results, settings, and practice progress are stored only in your own browser, and the newest 50 results are retained until you export or delete them.
What is a good typing speed?
Above roughly 40 WPM is fast relative to the documented transcription average of 32.5 WPM. Published professional ranges run from 43 to 80 WPM, with some roles requiring 80 to 95 WPM. Accuracy matters alongside speed, since most employers treat accuracy below 95% as disqualifying.
Does backspace count against my score?
You may correct mistakes with backspace, and corrections are tracked separately. A fixed character counts as correct for speed and accuracy, but the original mistake is still recorded so repeated problem keys can drive a targeted practice drill.
